About US

The Lakewood Lightning swim team is a neighborhood summer-only (May – June) recreational swim team that competes against other neighborhood teams [in swimming jargon usually summer teams are recreational and year round teams are “competitive”]. Any Lakewood Residents Club member between the ages of 4 - 18 on May 1st is eligible for the team.

Swimmers are expected to be able to swim the full 25 yards of the pool unassisted without touching the lane lines and/or the walls during tryouts. Some freestyle strokes should be evident during the 25. If swimmers are unable to swim the length of the pool unassisted, the coaches may recommend that they spend the year in lessons to prepare for next year. Swimmers should demonstrate, but are not required to complete, 25 backstroke as well. The swim team is very popular and new swimmers will only be able to tryout on new swimmer tryout day.Tryouts are first come first serve until all the team spots are filled. All swimmers are expected to practice once per week and attend at least two swim meets.

Other than the coaches, the team is run 100% with volunteers. Each family is responsible for volunteering to work the meets. We are proud to boast that we have not had to track volunteer effort like many other recreational teams.  Why?  Our parents love volunteering, it is a great way to meet new friends. Many teams charge anywhere from $150 - $250 for parents that have not volunteered a certain commitment. So please, when asked to volunteer, find a spot to help.  Try them all.  Volunteer jobs include lane timers, awards, concessions, etc. We have made the signup process for volunteer jobs during the season as easy as possible. The Lightning swim team could not happen without all the parents helping as it takes many volunteers to run multiple Swim Meets (Home and Away), prepare social activities, order gear, throw an end of season party and more! Any money raised by the Lightning Swim Team ultimately goes back to our swimmers and parents by paying for coaching, pools, equipment, social activities, t-shirts, medals, trophies and everything else. This is what makes the Ligtning fabulous!

The Lightning Home Meets are held at the beautiful Lakewood Residents Club Olympic size, 50m x 25yd Pool (Dive end of the pool)

The Lakewood Lightning swim team is part of the Northwest Aquatic League. The NWAL is a summer swim league composed of community and subdivision swim teams in the northwest Houston area. Teams compete every week between mid-May and the end of June. Several Invitational meets are conducted during and at the end of the season (end of June) with swimmers competing from each team.

The NWAL League was formed to create a friendly atmosphere for the benefit and personal satisfaction of our children. The league strives to offer an opportunity for children and young people to challenge themselves, to learn and think in a positive manner, to be part of a team and enjoy the experience of friendly competition and good sportsmanship.

The summer league season is a fast paced 2 month period but everyone who experiences it has a great time, makes new friends and looks forward to the next year.
